LegislationThe American Adoption Congress supports state-by-state legislative efforts to obtain access for adult adoptees to their original birth certificates (OBC). The AAC supports unrestricted access to this document for all adult adoptees in accordance with widely accepted best practices in adoption. As an umbrella organization, the AAC will work with local advocates to consider what course of action will ultimately result in a reliably efficient path, of deliberate speed, toward unrestricted original birth certificate access for all a state’s adult adoptees..
Our State Adoption Legislation page shows all of the U.S. States and what the access is for each one. This is kept up as legislation changes within each state.
Take the time to sign up on our Birthparent List, if you are for adult adoptees receiving access to their original Birth Certificate. This document is used by our people in the legislative arena to let the legislators know that Birthparents are NOT against adult adoptees having this access.
There are reform materials and also Landmark Court Rulings from this past year here.
