Haitian Adoptions Policy Statement

In response to the 380,000 orphaned Haitian children before the earthquake and the many children now without parents, the American Adoption Congress proposes that America's and Canada’s humanitarian policies be temporarily applied on a case-by-case basis to orphaned children who are already in process to be adopted by US citizens who have been approved and matched with children. We propose that foreign governments forego airlifts and new adoptions, but rather invest donations and time to register children, to find extended family members and to rebuild the infrastructure rather than taking children from their culture and their homeland.
